Bridal planning guide · Brisbane

Buying a wedding dress online or secondhand what to ask before you commit.

The dress in a listing may look right, while its actual measurements or earlier changes tell another story. Ask about those details before committing to a gown from a listing or another owner. An alteration assessment should relate to the gown you receive, not only the image or label.

An enquiry requests availability. The work, quote and appointment are confirmed separately.

At a glance

The useful starting point.

A useful purchase decision separates what is known from what still needs assessment. A photograph may show the design, but it cannot prove spare seam allowance or fabric strength. Keep those limits in mind when comparing gowns.

01The starting point

Treat the size label as a starting point.

The original label does not show the dress’s current fit after earlier work. Ask for the actual measurements and the way they were checked. If the gown is too small or short for your plan, do not assume spare material will be available inside it.

02Fit & construction

A preloved dress has a fitting history.

A hem may have been set for someone else’s shoes, and a seam may have already been let out. Ask about those changes before buying. The history may be incomplete, but it is still useful to share with the person assessing your own fit request.

03The details

Check the fabric and inner layers.

The outer image may not show lining damage or earlier repairs. Ask for the available condition details and read them alongside the fit measurements. If the plan depends on restoration or stain treatment, seek suitable advice rather than include that work as an assumed part of alterations.

04A clear next step

Do not buy on an unassessed alteration promise.

A future fitting cannot make every purchase risk disappear. Check what the seller has actually agreed and whether you can inspect or return the gown. Keep any advice about possible alterations separate from a confirmed quote for the dress itself.

Before you visit

A practical checklist.

Keep the relevant outfit choices and questions together.

  • Ask for actual garment measurements
  • Check known previous alterations
  • Read the available condition information
  • Check the seller’s stated purchase terms
  • Keep time for an assessment after the gown arrives
  • Avoid relying on an unconfirmed size change

A few things to know

Questions about the guide.

These answers explain the process and limits. Details for your own outfit must be confirmed after assessment.

Can I enquire about a gown bought from another store?

Yes. Explain the gown, fit concerns and any earlier work. An enquiry does not promise that every requested change is possible.

Is it safer to buy a dress that is much larger?

A large size difference can affect shape and detail as well as seam width. Seek advice about the actual gown rather than rely on a general sizing rule.

Can a second-hand hem be lengthened again?

The available fabric and earlier finish determine the options. Do not assume that material removed in a previous alteration is still available.

Do alterations include cleaning a preloved gown?

No. Cleaning and condition repairs are separate requests that need confirmation. They should not be assumed within a fit quote.

Can a listing photo prove the dress can be altered?

No. It can show the style and visible details, but not every seam, inner layer or limit of the construction.
